There was a year, before Toyota lost its mojo, that you could waltz into your local Toyota dealer and choose any of these gems. 1993 - an intersection of the new MkIV Supra, MR2 Turbo, and Celica All-Trac Turbo. Maybe someday we’ll have such choices from Toyota again.

The Corolla

You could also get things like a funky dual rear wiper Camry wagon, Celica cabrio, a bubble era overengineered mid-engined Previa minivan with available supercharging and AWD (not sure if available in 93) and on the lease return/late model used lot find things like Corolla wagon All-Trac and Camry All-Trac.

Could be worse, of course.
At least they’ll sell you a Subaru or BMW with Toyota badges.

I mean they have four sporty coupes :
86
Supra
RC
LC
It’s not the ‘90s variety , but it seems like they are trying as hard as any brand with a full lineup.

I agree! The world needs more fun cars.
They may be “collaboration products”, but at least they have the 86/Supra!

just so we’re all clear, 90-97 Toyota was best Toyota. That being said, they still make funs cars, they just are sports coupes.

I’ll give points for the LC 500 - it is the real new Supra and is Toyota designed and powered. It’s legit cool. The rest of the lineup doesn’t really register. GR Yaris excepted but only if they import to North America!

Exactly this. In this regard I'd say they're trying harder than most mainline brands..

First 2 aren’t Toyotas and GR Yaris not available in North America. LC500 counts though.

Toyota is really finding their way back. From what I have read Mr. Toyoda himself was really disappointed with the direction Toyota had been going over the last 15-20 years. The result has been a mandate from the top to be more interesting. Just look at the transformation the Corolla has gone through in the last two years, it went from literally the most boring car you could buy to a surprisingly capable and entertaining option.
People like to whine and complain about Toyota pairing with Subaru and BMW to build their sports cars but it’s a smart way for Toyota to offer dedicated fun cars without as much financial investment.
The LC 500 is pure automotive sex.

I'll grant the FJ is undeniably cool, but it's more the exception than the rule for the post '97 era..

IS 350
Off Roading in a Land Cruiser
ISF
RC350
RCF
TRD PRO trucks
Manual Corolla Hatchback
GR Yaris not available in the US but there is literally no new car in existence that sounds funner than that thing
Camry makes 300HP for fuck’s sake!
That Avalon TRD looks mean AF.
LC500 is actual pornography
And a number of mega rad non US cars.
Akio Toyoda is quite possible the raddest dude ever. Check out his instagram. CEO and endurance racer. Toyota competes in WEC, WRC, Nascar, SuperGT, Dakar, Nurburgring 24h.

Remember when Nissan made fun cars? Nissan is so depressing now. They’re more Toyota than Toyota. Remember 300ZX, Silvia, Exa, Skyline, Gloria and friends, Pulsar GTI-R, March SUPERTURBO.

Why hate on toyota? Mazda still has miata and ??? nissan has the aged z and if you count gtr as a car for the people. Go to infiniti or Lexus on the high end for RWD japanese cars otherwise. Honda/Acura has zero
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Remember the SFR consept? What a tease.
Toyota is the one company that could actually make a Miata competitor but they won’t.
I take that back Ford could do it with the Turbo 1.5i3 under the hood.

Man sure wanted a new supra...with a manual. Would’ve been fun to be a Toyota guy again, but alas...no manual no buy.

well they are, comissioned by Toyota just built by someone else (Fuji Heavy Industries for the GT86 which is owned by Toyota) and Supra built by Magna steyr commisioned by Toyota and just because you’re not getting the GR Y aris doesn’t mean they don’t build fun cars
